A new poll showed that most British people want their country to return to the EU and vote to rejoin the Union. The poll comes several years after the British people voted to leave the EU. Now the British are regretting this and are looking for a way for re-membership of the UK in the EU.
It has shown the consequences of its choice for the British
A poll conducted by the Savanta ComRes found that just one year after leaving the EU, the reality of Brexit has begun to emerge for many Britons. The Express, which was one of the defenders of Brexit, apparently had a significant turnaround after the publication of the Bank of England data on the UK’s business prospects outside the EU. The Express wrote that despite the reasonable efforts of the foreign secretary Liz Truss to amend the trade agreements that the country made as a member of the EU and the endless opportunities to be created, the UK failed to profit from this result. UK’s global size is rapidly disappearing. Therefore, new data show that the British desire for re-membership of the UK in the EU is increasing.
Fear of the consequences of leaving the EU
This pessimism about life outside the EU seems to be reflected in the results of this poll. Fifty-two per cent of Britons now say they would vote for the UK to rejoin the EU, up from 53 per cent last month. Meanwhile, 48% of Britons want to stay out of the EU, despite the 2016 referendum.
Leaving the EU at any cost
After nearly three years of political tension and a change of government in London, Boris Johnson finally took the helm of the government and the case for the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. From the 2016 referendum, when the majority of the British people voted to leave the EU, until the second half of 2019, the governments of David Cameron and Theresa May were not able to implement the Brexit process until Johnson promised to lead the Conservative Party and the PM. He stressed that in any case, even without an agreement with Brussels, the UK would be expelled from the EU.
Johnson’s extraordinary victory in the early elections
After much wrangling between the UK government and Parliament and early elections, the Conservatives and Johnson could win an unprecedented election in the last two decades. The Conservative Party could form a government without a coalition, and Johnson subsequently negotiated with the EU and domestic political groups.
The composition of the UK Parliament was such that Theresa May failed to get parliamentary approval several times on how to leave the Union. Still, the decisive victory of the Conservatives in the election caused the Parliament in the first stages with Johnson’s plan, which was previously approved. The leaders of 27 European countries had also agreed.
Leaving the EU from the beginning of 2021
After winning the British Parliamentary elections, Boris Johnson stated that the country’s withdrawal from the EU is a real issue. With an absolute majority of parliamentary seats, his government will leave the country by 31 January 2020. In response to Johnson’s urge to go, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also stated that the time for a trade agreement with the London government was too short. The country had only 11 months to negotiate and reach a trade agreement with the UK.
EU-UK agreements
Under the agreement reached between Johnson and EU leaders, a transition period was set for 2020 to finalize the details of the exit and future of bilateral trade cooperation. In Ireland’s case, determining border and customs regulations, citizenship, and political boundaries was particularly challenging. UK’s pre-accession to the EU is almost time-consuming and demanding as leaving the country also took years.
The opinion of EU citizens on the return of UK
Most EU citizens welcome UK’s re-membership in the EU. The poll was conducted by the Redfield & Wilton Strategies to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the majority of British voters voting to leave the EU. According to the poll, many EU citizens are closely monitoring UK’s performance after leaving the bloc. They are also prepared to consider leaving the EU as an option if the UK succeeds in the post-Brexit period.
The opinion of the citizens of the EU to continue their membership in this Union.
Five years ago, nearly 52% of British voters voted to leave the EU in a referendum. The Redfield & Wilton Strategies survey was conducted in France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. In each of these four countries, 1,500 people took part in the survey. A majority in all four countries have said they will vote for their country to stay in the EU if a referendum is held. The majority of respondents to the poll also said they had a positive view of the EU and believed that membership in the EU would benefit their country.
The British did not make the right decision in 2016
On the other hand, most participants in three countries, France, Germany and Spain, believe that British voters did not make the right decision in 2016. Only Italian respondents believe that the British made the right decision in the Brexit. Half of the Italians polled also said that if UK’s economic situation improved for another five years, they would be more likely to support Italy’s exit from the EU. The majority of French and Germans agree with the Italians. Meanwhile, only half of Spaniards agree with the citizens of the other three countries.
Support for the possible return of the UK to the EU
A majority of those polled by the Redfield & Wilton Strategies said they would welcome a possible British return to the EU and that re-membership of the UK in the EU was a good thing. However, participants agree on the potential return of the UK to the EU in four European countries. Spaniards are more welcome than citizens of the other three countries British re-membership of the EU. On the other hand, the French have shown the slightest chance of re-membership of the UK in the EU.
However, a YouGov poll previously found that only 35% of Britons have a very positive or more or less optimistic view of the EU. In contrast, 50% of its citizens have a very negative or more or less harmful idea of the EU.
With the final withdrawal of the UK from the EU, the British have realized the harmful consequences of this decision and are now seeking their country to rejoin the EU. Re-membership of the UK in the EU is not an easy task and can take years, even if requested.
