For weeks, Gaza has faced relentless invasions, explicitly targeting hospitals and refugee camps. Immediate international intervention is essential to protect the civilians there. Despite this urgency, UK MPs rejected a motion calling for an immediate ceasefire. This decision is particularly poignant as the MP Layla Moran’s family members died in Gaza due to a lack of medical care.
Layla Moran’s Relative Died of Medical Care Shortage
The UK Oxford West and Abingdon MP Layla Moran’s family member died in Gaza due to lack of medical care. The MP has Palestinian roots on her mother’s side, and her family members perished due to the lack of medical support in Gaza. Layla Moran expressed deep sadness as she addressed the Commons before a vote on a motion urging a ceasefire in the Israel-Gaza conflict. It’s been over a month since the people in besieged Gaza have been embroiled in war, resulting in the tragic loss of over 12,000 Palestinian lives.
UK Could not Minimise Civilian Casualties
Ms Moran, the Liberal Democrats’ foreign affairs spokeswoman, has said her family is sheltering in a church and can’t move because of Israeli bombing. She has added that her extended family’s health deteriorated in the last week, but they could not get to the hospital they needed. Ms Moran has reiterated that the UK government has failed the strategy to minimise civilian casualties in Gaza. The LibDem MP has called for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, but the Parliament voted 293 to 125 against the ceasefire.
Ceaseless Attacks Cause Extra Mortalities
Israeli attacks on hospitals, destroying medical facilities, and the continuous siege of Gaza strangled the enclave. An international will to force Israel to accept a ceasefire is critical to prevent more deaths in Gaza. The recent UK Parliamentary vote on a motion for a ceasefire in Gaza has failed to secure enough support from the MPs. Although the MP Layla Moran’s family member died in Gaza due to a lack of medical care, the Commons voted against the motion. Unfortunately, more ceaseless Israeli raids mean more civilian fatalities.
Westminster Supports Humanitarian Pause Rather Than Ceasefire
The ruling Conservatives and the main opposition Labour Party’s leadership clarified that they would not back the motion. Like the United States and the European Union, the UK government has called for humanitarian pauses to help aid reach Gaza rather than a ceasefire. Amnesty International UK’s Chief Executive Sacha Deshmukh MP Ceasefire has said the vote was a historic missed opportunity. A ceasefire is crucial to further catastrophic loss of civilian life in Gaza and enable aid agencies to get life-saving aid to the enclave.
Many Health Facilities Are Not Operational
The ongoing military attacks by Israel hit hospitals, schools, and UN-run facilities, killing more than 5,000 children so far. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, more than 32,000 Palestinians have been injured since the war began in Gaza. These people desperately need medical care, while the ministry faces severe challenges with medical services. Israeli airstrikes on hospitals and healthcare clinics and the fuel shortages forced 26 out of 35 hospitals and 52 out of 72 primary healthcare clinics to stop their operations.
Wounded Palestinians Need Health Aid
The scale of bloodshed in Gaza is unprecedented, and the number of injured people in need of medical care is surging. However, the UK Government did not join the international community to push for an immediate ceasefire in the besieged Gaza. Layla Moran’s family members died in Gaza due to a lack of medical care, as well as many other civilians. The International Committee of the Red Cross has expressed extreme concern about the condition of sick and wounded people, medical staff, and civilians in Gaza.
Israel Launches War on Gaza Hospitals
Hospitals across Gaza are struggling to remain open while the Israeli raids target them. The largest Gaza medical complex, Al-Shifa, was the primary target of Israeli ground assaults. Amid intense troops and tank attacks, the situation for the patients and staff has been catastrophic. Israeli forces besieged the Al-Shifa hospital from all four directions and launched rocket and artillery shells in the vicinity of the hospital. Several explosions have shaken the buildings while Israeli forces said they had begun a precise operation in the Hospital.
Patients Are Not Safe
A healthcare centre, a hospital, or a clinic is a facility that should be a haven for civilians in need. The protection of patients, newborns, medical staff, and all civilians must be preserved under the rules of war. Health facilities and centres are not battlegrounds, but in Gaza, many of them are no longer operational. Many of the hospitals suffer from a lack of medicine and fuel, not capable of taking new patients despite the rising number of wounded civilians.
Ceasefire Allows Entrance of Aid to Gaza
The World Health Organisation has several times called for an immediate ceasefire to prevent rising injuries and deaths. According to the WHO, al-Shifa and Al-Quds hospitals face dire and perilous situations. Israel’s constant bombardment and ground operations have exacerbated the critical circumstances in the enclave. The blockade has also left healthcare facilities and staff on their feet, requiring urgent action to save people. An immediate ceasefire could make it possible to allow medical aid supplies to enter Gaza.
UK Demonstrators Complain to the Politicians
Thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators rallied across Britain, calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. Many people have gathered before the UK Labour Party’s leader Keir Starmer and chanted ‘ceasefire now’. Although Starmer, Sunak, and other lawmakers heard about the Liberal Democrats MP’s speech, they rejected the SNP motion to support a ceasefire in Gaza. Layla Moran’s family member died in Gaza due to a lack of medical care, but the UK politicians have not endorsed a ceasefire on the war in Gaza.
World Politicians Should Stop Genocide in Gaza
More than 2.3 of Palestinians are living in the besieged Gaza, where around 1.1 million have been displaced since the start of the war over a month ago. Israeli strikes flatten buildings, and tens of thousands of Gazans have fled to schools, believing they would be safe from Israeli attacks. However, Israeli strikes targeted the schools and refugee camps, killing hundreds of people, including children. It is an ongoing genocide against civilians in Gaza, and world leaders should take their part to stop the crisis.
