The death of Elizabeth II: the rise of independence in Wales

  • What effect did the Queen’s death have on the status of independence groups in the UK?
  • What is the status of independence in Scotland and Northern Ireland?
  • What is the state of public opinion in Wales regarding separation from the UK?
  • How does the increase in independence in Wales affect the future of the UK?

At the same time as the movements of anti-monarchy and independence groups in the UK increased, the first minister of Wales stated that this country was more vulnerable than ever before. The rise of independence in Wales is the latest threat to UK’s national unity. The surge of freedom in Wales could also stimulate other regions.

People do not mourn the death of the Queen.

Coinciding with the funeral of the Queen of the UK on September 19 in London, Newsweek wrote in a report entitled “The People Refusing To Mourn Queen Elizabeth’s Death”. Some people do not mourn the death of the Queen because they see her as the leader of a ruthless empire responsible for the deaths of millions. CNN also previously had an interview with people in London in which some said they are not sad for the Queen because the British monarchy has a colonial history. There are scandals about some royal members.

Denial of Sinn Fein party from attending parliament

The opponents of the monarchy in the UK do not have a place in the political pillars of this country, like the seven representatives of the people of Northern Ireland from the Sinn Fein party, who refused to take the oath of loyalty to the Queen to enter the parliament. For this reason, they have been banned from attending the legislative assembly of this country. The rise of independence in Wales can also be interpreted as opposition to the monarchy.

The lack of position of opponents of the monarchy in the media

Of course, the opponents of the monarchy have no place in the media of this country, such as Trevor Sinclair, a former football player and expert and sports reporter of talkSPORT, who was attacked after his tweet, which led to its deletion, who wrote that racism in the UK until the decade 1960 was legal and famous, so why should blacks and Asians mourn the death of the Queen?

The rise of independence movements with the death of the Queen

Other regions influence the rise of independence in Wales. Inside the UK, the movements of anti-royal groups increased after the death of Elizabeth, the Queen of this country, and threatened the foundations of the new king’s power. Statistics show that nearly a quarter of the British want the end of the monarchy in this country. The findings of the YouGov polling institute show that 25 percent of British people do not consider the continuation of the monarchy appropriate for the country, and the number of supporters of the monarchy has decreased since June 2020.

Referendum to establish a republic in the Americas

The death of Queen Elizabeth II and the accession of Charles III to the throne, with all its marginality and corruption, have brought different reactions around the world, including in countries that are part of the symbolic territory of the British monarchy. Gaston Browne, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, has announced that following Queen Elizabeth II’s death, he will hold a referendum within three years regarding the transformation of this country into a republic.

Independence in Australia

Also, following the death of the Queen of the UK, Australian Republicans have revived a long-standing debate on ending the country’s dependence on the British monarchy. Adam Bandt, a prominent Australian Republican politician and leader of the Greens party in this country, said following the death of Elizabeth II: “Our thoughts are with her family and all who loved her. Now Australia must move forward.” He wrote on Twitter: “We need Treaty with First Nations people, and we need to become a Republic.”

Wales’ growing desire to secede from the UK

The rise of independence in Wales is severe. Wales’s first minister Mark Drakeford, in response to a question about the future of Wales in the event of freedom from Scotland and Northern Ireland, stated that although the Welsh independence movement is a minority. There is a growing interest in public opinion to separate from the UK; the dangers seen in the future of this country are inevitable. The rise of independence in Wales could divide the UK into several countries.

Northern Ireland and Scotland in the forefront of independence from the UK

Mark Drakeford predicted that Northern Ireland and Scotland would be the first in line to break away from the UK, followed by Wales. Drakeford made it clear that the notion that with independence for Northern Ireland and Scotland, things would go on as before as if nothing had happened was unacceptable. He clarified that Wales is seriously considering the options ahead for separation from the UK.

The rise of separatist groups in the UK

Their official authorities have declared independence in Wales. The first minister of Wales made these comments while the rise of separatist groups in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales in recent years threatens the unity of the UK. Nicola Sturgeon, Minister of Scotland, plans to hold a referendum on the independence of this region on October 19, 2023.

The decision of the Supreme Court of the UK in favour of Scotland

Although the London government has expressed opposition to this issue, the UK Supreme Court has ruled in favour of the Scottish local government. In this way, if the Scottish referendum is held and the people of this region vote to separate from the UK, we can expect the dominoes of the separation of the UK will begin.

With the death of Queen Elizabeth II, voices from the past colonies of the UK, which were now symbolically considered part of the Queen’s territory, were raised, demanding to become a republic and get out of the British monarchy. In other words, the death of Queen Elizabeth II, while reminding the margins of her life and the members of the royal family, has strengthened the position of independence seekers and republicans and weakened the position of supporters of the monarchy in the UK.
