The danger of Liz Truss’s controversial policies

Calls for an immediate general election in the UK have increased as the country’s economic woes have worsened as a result of the controversial policies of the Liz Truss government. Liz Truss announced in her economic program that he would reduce corporate taxes to increase investment motivation and deal with the economic recession in this country. By doing this, critics say, she will only give more profits to big companies that have made free profits and increase the government’s public debt, which government must pay from the pockets of all people.

The popularity of the government’s rival party

The dire economic situation caused widespread public discontent in the UK and significantly weakened the foundations of Liz Truss’s government. According to the latest poll conducted in the UK, the popularity of the conservative ruling party has decreased by 7 points to 21%. Meanwhile, the popularity of the government’s rival party (Labor), led by Keir Starmer, has increased by 9 points to 54%. This 33% advantage is the highest difference in the popularity of the two parties since 1990.

Immediate general election

Not only do the Labor Party and the Liberal Democrats want to hold early elections, but the citizens of this country have also launched a campaign to support this idea. To date, 250 thousand of signatures have been collected for early elections. With the spread of dissatisfaction with the economic plans of the new UK government, the people of this country are demanding early elections. The petition on the Parliament’s website states: Hold direct general elections so that the people can decide who should lead us out of the unprecedented crises that threaten the country.

The content of the electronic petition

The text of the electronic petition states that a series of crises, including the war in Ukraine. The agreement on the border in Northern Ireland that has damaged the relationship between the UK and the EU, the risk of economic stagnation and the possibility of the separation of Scotland from the UK are the biggest challenges in the era Contemporary has created. After days of silence in the face of criticism, new UK Prime Minister Liz Truss has defended her economic plans as volatility continues in UK’s financial markets.

The government’s failure to respond to the electronic petition

According to the latest statistics published on the website of the British Parliament, as many as 578,594 British citizens have signed this petition. According to political procedures, the UK government must respond if the number of signatures on a petition exceeds 10,000 people. If it exceeds 100,000 people, The House of Commons will discuss the request even though the UK government, contrary to the defined procedure, has not yet responded to this petition.

Unprecedented chaos in the UK

The petition above states that the chaos ruling the UK is unprecedented. It points out that more than 40 ministers have resigned in the face of the country’s crises and that the UK is facing the risk of stagnation and disintegration. All in all, the UK economic situation is in the worst condition of the last half century as a result of several consecutive crises in recent years. Statistics and polls show that the UK is in the worst situation compared to all OECD members.

Opposition parties want to hold early elections.

After announcing the resignation of the Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labor Party, has called for an immediate general election. Nicola Sturgeon, the first minister of Scotland, has also said that holding parliamentary elections after Liz Truss’s resignation is necessary. Liz Truss said in a speech that she has announced her decision to resign to the King of the UK and will carry out her duties until new leadership is chosen for the Conservative Party.

Conservatives looking for a new leader

Truss also said the Conservative Party would elect a new leader within a week. Liz Truss is the fourth UK Prime Minister in the last six years to be forced to resign due to internal party differences. A few weeks ago, while he was the foreign minister of Boris Johnson’s government, she was elected as the Prime Minister of the UK by his fellow party members.

Resignation of government ministers Liz Truss

In the latest blow to the fledgling government of Liz Truss, Home Secretary Suella Braverman resigned after violating the ministry’s rules. A few days ago, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Kwasi Kwarteng, left after presenting an economic plan that led to a historic fall in the pound’s value and financial turmoil in this country.

Conservative distrust of Liz Truss

The resignation of Liz Truss, while she said in the inflammatory session of the Parliament a few days ago that she will not resign. She said: “Once again, I want to accept responsibility and say sorry for the mistakes I made.” In this regard, YouGov also published the results of a survey that showed that most Conservative Party members want Liz Truss to resign from the leadership of this party and the UK Prime Minister.

The possibility of PM Boris Johnson gaining strength

Sky News also wrote that just six weeks after the election of Liz Truss as Prime Minister by members of the Conservative Party, they wanted Truss to resign. Their priority for her replacement is Boris Johnson, the former UK Prime Minister. On the other hand, the British financial market immediately reacted to the resignation of Liz Truss, and news sources reported a decrease in the value of this country’s bonds.

The endless cycle of the UK’s troubles

The UK has been in an endless cycle of misfortunes for years, and it seems that it has no intention of getting out of it. This country was involved in the Brexit crisis for many years. While it has not yet recovered from it, it entered into the Covid-19 situation and many economic problems caused by it. At the same time as it was trying to get out of the consequences of the Covid-19 crisis, the deadly financial blows caused by the war in Ukraine hit the government.

The value of the pound has fallen to a record low.

The government prepared the mentioned file before the presentation of the mini-budget report of Kwasi Kwarteng, which led to a record-low fall in the parity value of the pound against other currencies, and the inflation rate is increasing rapidly. The latest report of the ONS shows that the UK economy is smaller than in 2021 and one step closer to recession.

On the other hand, the Conservative Party of the UK, which is currently the ruling party, prefers to elect a new prime minister by holding a meeting to appoint a new leader. Boris Johnson, Penny Mordaunt and Rishi Sunak have announced their readiness for this position. Conservatives will decide on their party leader on October 28th, next week, but the immediate general election campaign must reach a million signatures to be considered. The UK has a turbulent week ahead.
